The name Immanuel was a promise and a prayer – “may God be with us” – the ancient human longing. The birth of Jesus was the first part of God’s answer to that prayer, and his second coming will answer it in fullness. Today we live expectantly between the promise and the finale – but the world does not expect us to live up to our truth-claim. Will we show them that it really is true? Psalm 137 is both a lament for a painful situation and a plea for justice. It is expressed in language designed to shock us into recognizing the reality of evil in the world and to bring that before God. Jesus teaches us an even more costly and constructive response to evil–the path of forgiveness and blessing. As we pray psalms like this in the spirit of Jesus our natural instincts are transformed and we are re-shaped for Kingdom living in a hostile world.
